E.S. Naturalists take on their first big project....

ONANCOCK SCHOOL PATH
Long Term Plan

MISSION: to reclaim green space along creek, allowing access and providing an
educational environment with multiple opportunities for the public to interact with nature.

MAJOR GOALS:

  1. ADA accessible path that starts at the parking lot on north side of school, travels along the perimeter of the tree line, and continues around the back of the ball field to eventually connect to the sidewalk on the south side of the ball field.
  2. Mulched paths that connect to the paved walkway and wind into the woods, along the creek, and back to the walkway.
  3. Restore the dock for canoe and kayak use.
  4. Replace or repair fence to separate soccer and ball fields from wetlands and other planted areas.
  5. Improve and enhance riparian buffer by a minimum of 25 feet with native tree and shrubs.
  6. Remove invasive species from woods and marsh, replacing with native shrubs, grasses and flowers with labels.
  7. Provide interpretive signage for wetlands, marshes, and riparian buffers with habitat descriptions.
  8. Restore playground.
  9. Build a bridge over the creek that would allow golf carts to cross into town.
  10. Provide trash receptacles along walkway.

The ESNaturalists have not fully approved this plan as yet, but they've already had several work sessions, and are beginning to make progress on clearing some of the areas where the paths will be. We are still trying to get the basic path design down before opening up work dates. We will want to have other groups involved in bigger work projects - when we want to start clearing for the asphalt path, etc. We think the Boy Scouts may be able to help us with a clean up when we have a very low tide. You wouldn't believe the junk we've pulled out so far

If anyone wants to contact ESNaturalists, contact Donna Ware at -- djwares@gmail.com

We will be working March 28, April 4, 11 & 25
to try to get ahead of the bugs

Below are some photos from some of the first work sessions.. ..........

More photos will follow as the work progresses............
